Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 2 large onions yellow preferred
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon paprika optional
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder

Wet Ingredients

  • 1 cup cold water or buttermilk
  • 1 egg optional

For Cooking

  • Oil for frying vegetable or sunflower
  • Cooking spray for baking/air frying option

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Onions

  • Peel the onions and slice them into very thin rings (about 1–2 mm thick). Carefully separate each ring and set aside.

Step 2: Make the Dry Mixture

  • In a large mixing bowl, combine:
  • Flour
  • Cornstarch
  • Baking powder
  • Salt
  • Pepper
  • Paprika
  • Garlic powder
  • Onion powder
  • Mix well to evenly distribute all ingredients.

Step 3: Prepare the Batter

  • In another bowl:
  • Whisk together cold water (or buttermilk) and egg
  • Gradually add the dry mixture to form a smooth batter
  • Ensure the batter is slightly thick but still light and pour able.

Step 4: Coat the Onion Rings

  • Dip each onion ring into the batter:
  • Ensure full coating
  • Let excess batter drip off
  • Keep the coating thin for chip-like crispiness

Step 5: Fry the Onion Chips

  • Heat oil to 175–180°C (350°F)
  • Fry in small batches
  • Cook for 2–3 minutes until golden and crispy
  • Remove and place on paper towels

Step 6: Alternative Cooking Methods

  • Air Fryer:
  • Preheat to 180°C (360°F)
  • Arrange in a single layer
  • Cook for 10–12 minutes
  • Baking:
  • Preheat oven to 200°C (400°F)
  • Place on lined tray and spray lightly with oil
  • Bake 15–20 minutes, flipping halfway

Notes

  • Extra Crispiness Tip: Adding cornstarch improves crunch significantly.
  • Keep Batter Cold: Cold batter creates a crispier texture when fried.
  • Healthier Option: Air frying or baking can reduce calories by up to 60–70% compared to deep frying.
  • Storage: Store in an airtight container for up to 2 days.
  • Reheating: Reheat in oven or air fryer to maintain crispiness.
  • Flavour Variations:
Spicy: Add chili powder or cayenne
    Cheesy: Sprinkle parmesan after cooking
    Smoky: Use smoked paprika
